The 14th November is World Diabetes Day, where people rally together to raise money for a cure and awareness to help make things easier in the meantime.
Some of the misconceptions are challenging to people with T1D and their families and one of the questions that lots of people with T1D get asked most often is, ‘Is it O.K. to eat that?’
The answer, of course, is ‘Yes!’.
Type 1 is often confused with Type 2 diabetes, where diet plays a vital role in keeping blood glucose levels under control. However, Type 1 diabetes is different. People with Type 1 can eat anything as long as they’re not allergic to it! The only difference is that the carbohydrate content has to be counted. This is easy to do simply by checking the packets, or by asking the internet how many carbs the item contains. There are books and apps to help and once carb counting is established, educated guesses can be made.
GT1 is joining in with raising awareness by sharing a fact a week on Facebook. This weeks fact is….
People with T1D can eat anything they like! (As long as they count the carbohydrates.)
Obviously, everyone, regardless of having T1D, should be eating a healthy balanced diet, but treats in all diets should be allowed! So today we will be eating our cakes and treats and enjoying them! 🙂
